We need Jim Moeller.
Recently, I received my second heart transplant. My first transplant gave me 17 years. What amazing gifts from a caring community! My heart that beats is strong; but my heart that feels breaks, knowing that other families must refuse a transplant because they lack health insurance.
My third heart may get me to retirement age. But, will I have health insurance then, when I know I will again face catastrophic costs?
My story explains one of the reasons I support re-electing Jim Moeller for State Representative. I have known Jim since we graduated together from Fort Vancouver High School. Jim believes that our society is great enough and our communities caring enough that we can provide health care for all. I know Jim is guided by compassion and humanity, not ideology. We not only need to re-elect Jim, we need many other politicians like him. My future depends on it.

LETTER TO THE EDITOR < letters@columbian.com >
I do not often write to my constituents in the community but felt a need to support Mr. Jim Moeller whom I have had the opportunity to work with on Veterans Issues.
He has brought to the community tremendous support for Veterans issues, that relate to taking care of our servicemen and women across the State of Washington. He not only has stood behind the veteran issues, but has taken the high road to becoming active in his roll as a legislature for veterans. His recent and past dedication to helping veterans is beyond and above what was actually expected. He has taken the time to meet with veterans across the state to find out what our needs are, not a person to work out of his office, he goes out into the community to communicate, share and deliver support for not only our Active Duty, Reserve and National Guard, but also has represented every serviceman and woman in the State.
His attention to assisting Veterans who have come on hard times is of particular note with the recent passing of an excellent program for all of our Counties to assist veterans in need.
When, attempting to credit and honor him for his accomplishments, perseverance in helping veterans, he humbly and quietly takes a back seat and thanks those veterans who came forward in our ‘Town Hill’ meetings with him. Through his leadership and excellent abilities to communicate he brought veterans together to overcome differences in ‘how to’ accomplish the overall mission of helping veterans.
Also noted that when an issue arises in the veteran community, Mr. Moeller always has an open door policy and makes time to share and discuss concerns with his veterans and for that matter anyone who comes to him with concerns. I have never received from him the ‘Standard Letter’ that many of our representatives put out, it has always been on a personal nature and with ‘real’ concern.
I cannot speak for all veterans, but feel that I speak for a large majority of my peers in the community. As this is an election year I would ask that each of you consider Mr. Moeller’s accomplishments, his sincerity in serving all of the people in our communities.

Jim Moeller, the Whole Person
As the primaries are drawing near I could not sit idly by and watch my friend be portrayed very narrowly as a one issue candidate by in my view a narrowed minded and mean spirited group of individuals. Therefore I wanted to speak up for the man who is champion of civil rights, a champion of equality in education, a champion of opportunities for women, and people of color.
I first met Jim when as a city councilman he was a part of a committee that developed a well thought out plan for a Human Rights Commission for the Vancouver. At that time Vancouver was the only city of its size in the State Of Washington which did not have a Commission. Yet, the Religious zealots came out of the wood work to allege that this Commission was about Gay Rights, rather than human rights. What utter nonsense. And while they were successful for a season in denying people (particularly women and minorities) including white men protections against discrimination, today the doors of the Washington State Human Rights Commission are now open in Vancouver. Halleluiah, Jim Moeller and people with vision persevered and now we have a local place where we can seek redress to violations of our civil rights.
As a champion of equality in education Jim has continued to support those children who have been left behind. Three years ago the Vancouver Branch NAACP initiated an effort to develop an African American Rites Of Passage program. This program is designed to help academically challenged African American children which according statistic are disproportionately represented in those failing the WASL, expelled from school, arrested and prosecuted. Jim Moeller not only joined us in curriculum development discussions, but he and Bill Fromhold led the development of a bi-partisan letter of support for the program.
Finally, let me mention Jim Moeller a servant of “all” the people. When Jim went to Olympia he called me and asked the Vancouver NAACP to recommend African American Students to serve as Legislative Pages. I thought I would check the archives of our leadership to determine if any other representative had done the same. The answer is that in the Branch’s 61 year history Jim Moeller was the first Representative to request a nomination from the Branch. Fanta Kamara, the student Jim sponsored is currently attending the University of Pittsburgh on a full academic scholarship.
This is the Jim Moeller I know and the man I will proudly support in the upcoming primary because of the job that he does to represent all of us with honesty and integrity. It is sad that my friend is so maligned not because he is a cheater, liar, adultery, or a bad politician, but simply because of whom he has chosen to love.

Editor, in a political climate where the best talking point or zinger
wins and public discourse gets more polarized each day I want to
acknowledge a rare voice of reason and sanity: state Rep. Jim
Moeller. The best example of Jim’s calm, thoughtful approach comes in
an area of bitter divisiveness – guns. He has been instrumental in
forming a group here in Vancouver that promotes children’s safety
through education, prevention and community partnership. Simply put,
the group just wants parents to ask if there’s a gun in the homes
where their children play. It’s a common-sense approach but one that
predictably draws fire from those who think it’s a subversive attempt
to take away their guns. Jim has insisted on bringing both sides
together to discuss the issue in a rational manner. While the group
and its activities are in their infancy, I think I speak for all the
members when I say that Jim’s pragmatic approach to getting things
done has been extraordinarily helpful. We could use a few more Jim
Moellers in our state House, our state Senate and even our Congress,
because governing is, by necessity, a bi-partisan affair. It may not
make for good soundbites or provide red meat to partisans on either
side, but Jim’s way gets things done and thank goodness for that.

TO THE COLUMBIAN EDITOR (not published in the Columbian):
Jim Moeller’s record as legislative representative indeed proves that
his re-election is a must for 49th district-voters.
He is not a pius platitude expounder. He helped sponsor the following
vital legislation:
~ $180 million towards road improvements.
~ Funds to complete the SW WA Crime Lab
~ Creating incentives to jump-state the economy and save hundreds of
local jobs in technology and manufacturing
~ Freeing up money caught up in red tape to help Veterans and our
National Guard gain access to their deserved benefits
~ “Living Will” in an excessible state registry
Jim sponsors leglislation placing patient’ needs first, not those of
the lobbiests, and drug companies.
Seeing patients’ premiums esctale at crisis levels in our state, Jim
does not heistate to adevocate Universal Health Care as a remedy.
As a former member of the Board of the SW Washington Health District,
Jim Moeller had first hand experience
in stretching scarce resource-funds for treatment. and health care
services …and he is credible.
A vote for Jim Moeller is a vote for us!
His slogan is: ALWAYS DEMAND THE DETAILS.
